Wi-Fi Basics

What Is Wi-Fi?

is the technology that lets your devices join a network — usually to reach the internet — over radio waves instead of a cable. Your phone, laptop, and TV all connect wirelessly to a central box (an , often built into your home router), which is itself wired to the internet. Under the hood, Wi-Fi follows a family of technical rules called , which is why you sometimes see numbers like '802.11ac' on a router box.

Wi-Fi is not the internet

Wi-Fi is only the wireless link between your device and your router. The internet is a separate thing the router connects to. That is why you can be connected to Wi-Fi with full signal and still have no internet if the line behind the router is down.

A two-way radio station

Picture the access point as a small radio station and your devices as radios that can both listen and talk back. They tune to the same channel, and as long as they are in range and speak the same version of the language, they can trade messages through the air.

Wi-Fi Standards (Generations)

Wi-Fi has improved over the years through new versions of the 802.11 standard. Because names like '802.11ax' are hard to remember, the industry now uses simple numbers: Wi-Fi 4, 5, 6, and 7. Each generation is faster and handles more devices at once. The speeds below are theoretical maximums — real-world speeds are always lower — but they show the trend clearly:

Frequency Bands: 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz

Wi-Fi sends its signal on one of a few — think of them as different lanes of airwaves. The two classic ones are 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz (newer gear adds 6 GHz). The 2.4 GHz band travels further and passes through walls better, but it is slower and crowded with other gadgets like microwaves and Bluetooth. The 5 GHz band is much faster and less crowded, but its shorter waves fade sooner and struggle more with walls.

How a Device Joins Wi-Fi

Connecting to Wi-Fi feels instant, but a few steps happen behind the scenes. The access point announces itself, your device picks it and proves it is allowed on, and only then does data flow:

  • The access point regularly broadcasts its network name, the SSID, so devices know it is there
  • Your device scans, lists the networks it can hear, and you pick one
  • Your device proves it is allowed on, usually by entering the Wi-Fi password
  • The device associates with the access point, forming the wireless link
  • It receives an IP address automatically and can now reach the network and the internet

Wi-Fi Security

Because Wi-Fi signals spread through the open air, anyone nearby could try to listen in — so the connection must be encrypted. Encryption has improved over time: was the original and is now trivially broken, WPA was a stopgap, and today you should use WPA2 or the newest WPA3. An open network with no password gives no encryption at all, so treat those as public.

Good Wi-Fi security habits

  • Turn on WPA2 or WPA3 encryption on your router
  • Choose a long, hard-to-guess Wi-Fi password
  • Keep the router's software (firmware) up to date
  • Treat open, password-free Wi-Fi as public and avoid sensitive tasks on it

"More Wi-Fi bars always means a faster internet connection."

Signal bars only show how strong the link between your device and the router is. Your actual internet speed is limited by the plan from your provider behind the router. Full bars with a slow or dead internet line still means slow or no internet — the two are separate.

Q:What is the difference between the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands?

A: 2.4 GHz reaches further and goes through walls better, but it is slower and more crowded because many devices use it. 5 GHz is faster and less congested, but its range is shorter and it is weaker through walls. As a rule of thumb, use 5 GHz when you are near the router and want speed, and 2.4 GHz when you are far away or behind walls.
