Static Routing
What Is Static Routing?
Static routing is the simplest way for a router to know where to send data: a human administrator types in the routes by hand. A is just an instruction that says "to reach this destination network, send the packet this way." With static routing, those instructions are fixed — they stay exactly as entered and never change on their own until a person edits them. The word "static" simply means unchanging.
The one-line version
Static routes are configured manually and stay fixed. The router blindly follows them and never updates them itself — that is entirely the administrator's job.
Like handwritten directions on the wall
Imagine directions taped to a wall: "For the warehouse, take the second left." They are clear, exact, and never argue. But if that road closes for repairs, the note is now wrong — and it stays wrong until someone walks over and rewrites it. Static routes are those notes: dependable, but only as up-to-date as the last person who edited them.
How It Works
Setting up a static route is a manual, deliberate process. The administrator decides, for each destination network they care about, which direction packets should go, and enters that into the router. From then on, the router simply matches incoming packets against those entries and forwards them accordingly.
Configuring a static route
- The administrator identifies a destination network that the router needs to reach.
- They choose the next hop — the neighbouring router's address — or the exit interface to use.
- They enter this route into the router's configuration by hand.
- The router then forwards every packet matching that destination the same way, until the entry is changed.
The Trade-offs
Static routing trades adaptability for simplicity and control. On a small network those trade-offs are often worth it; on a large or changing one, they become painful. Here is the balance:
Advantages
- Simple to set up and understand on small networks
- Predictable — routes are exactly what the admin chose
- No extra CPU, memory, or bandwidth used by routing protocols
- More secure, since the router advertises no route information to others
- Gives the administrator full, precise control
Disadvantages
- Does not scale — every route must be added by hand
- No automatic reaction if a link or router fails
- Easy to make mistakes as the number of routes grows
- Heavy ongoing workload to keep large networks correct
- Changes require a human to log in and edit each router
When to Use It
Static routing shines when a network is small, simple, or has only one sensible path anyway. A common case is a — a network with just a single connection to the outside world, so there is only one direction out and nothing to decide dynamically. It is also the usual way to set a router's path to the internet.
Good fits for static routing
- Small networks with only a handful of routes to manage
- Stub networks that have a single exit path
- Setting a default route that sends unknown traffic toward the internet
- Backup routes that take over only if a primary path fails
