LAN, MAN, WAN, PAN
Classifying Networks by Size
Networks are often grouped by their geographic reach — how far apart the connected devices are. From smallest to largest, the four common categories are PAN, LAN, MAN, and WAN. The bigger the area covered, the more technology, cost, and coordination it takes to keep everything connected.
Rooms, buildings, cities, countries
Think of it like zooming out on a map: a PAN is the space around one person, a LAN is a building, a MAN is a city, and a WAN spans regions or the whole globe. Same idea — connected devices — just at ever-larger scales.
PAN — Personal Area Network
A PAN covers the space around a single person, typically just a few meters. It connects your personal devices to each other — think of your phone linked to wireless earbuds, a smartwatch, or a laptop. is the classic PAN technology.
LAN — Local Area Network
A LAN connects devices within a single location like a home, office, or school. It's owned and managed by one organization or person, offers high speeds, and usually runs over cables or Wi-Fi. The network in your house is a LAN.
MAN — Metropolitan Area Network
A MAN spans a city or large campus — bigger than a LAN, smaller than a WAN. It often links several LANs across a metropolitan area. Cable TV networks and city-wide services run by a local provider are typical examples.
WAN — Wide Area Network
A WAN covers large distances — regions, countries, or the entire planet. It connects many smaller networks together, usually over infrastructure owned by telecom companies. The internet itself is the largest WAN in existence: a WAN of WANs.

Easy way to remember the order
By size, smallest to largest: PAN < LAN < MAN < WAN. Personal → Local → Metropolitan → Wide. Speed usually drops and cost rises as the area grows, because covering more distance is harder.
